Penang Street Art is Marvelous

I just came back from a family trip to Penang on 25-28 Nov 2012 ....

Georgetown, Penang is not a small place. When I first planning to check-out the mural in Georgetown, every street looked so tiny on the map, I thought is an easy task because I used to do "photowalk" a lot, thus, I'm planning to walk around Georgetown to find out the location of all those murals.

On the day itself, after I were walking around about a kilometer on the street under hot sun, I realized how wrong am I to walk in Georgetown, it was full of small lanes and junctions, you just couldn't figure out which lane to go and my family members are so tired walking together with me (they wanted to support me and join in to walk around)....

Without hesitation, I walked back quickly for another kilometer to get my car in the hotel, I decided to photo-drive instead of photo-walk, It was easy to drive around in Georgetown with the help of google map!! With car traveling around, I found my target one by one.

The mural of girl and boy riding bicycle .... It was my favorite, looking at the face expression of the boy seated at the back showing how scary he felt but excited, They looked so real. An actual old bicycle was used to decorate with the painting was a brilliant idea, it made the whole drawing standing out with 3D effect.

Armenian Street

Another favorite mural was the young man riding a real motorbike and he was looking behind.  After I re-looked again at the photograph, and notice I have missed out the monster chasing the boy ... hahahaha ..

How can I missed out the important part? Luckily I was using my 15mm body cap lens ... it was wide enough to include part of the monster body. (by the way, I also missed out the side drawing of a little boy who walked his monster pet... )

What's a mistake !!

The old looking wall with the red rough and tatty door had made the painting standout ... just awesome beautiful.

Ah Quee Street

Thank to the blogger from "OnlyPenang" and it had given a full highlight about the mural in Penang. They have highlighted the artist is Ernest Zacharevic and even his facebook link. The drawing of people is so real with clear expression, those drawings are really awesome and give some excitement in the boring street.

Right opposite of my hotel has another big piece of mural ... while I was searching high and low, it was just under my nose ... hahaha, this big wall mural is located at Penang Road and it was huge. The artist managed to show the picture in great details. Beautiful.

Penang Road

I also found another smaller mural ... a boy is trying to take a little frog toy.

Some murals are difficult to find because they are located in different corner of the street. I have missed out a few, but because I was with my family, I don't have time to search back. The last mural that found was at chew jetty, The boatman and a boy ... I love it. Due to the mural is by the sea, the mural is facing erosion problem, part of the paints had peel off. Very soon it will be disappeared.

Beside mural, I notice some art structures were constructed by the road side. They are drawing but made by wire or tiny iron bar. Very nice and beautified the city. I captured a few shots for sharing here.

Can you read the message ?

hahaha ... old man likes me could not read due to my long sighted ... still too tiny .... let make it big ..

Hahaha ... the message is something to do with "One Leg Kick" .... for Cantonese people, surely would know what that means ....

This photo I have to stitch 3 photos together to capture the whole view ...

It wasn't done using panorama function in the camera. I don't know how to use it. But I managed to combine 3 photos, guess is still okay for my standard.

In your next trip to Penang, don't forget to find those mural ... it is fun to do it.

By the way, i did up a map to indicate the location, I am not sure whether is all correct or not, I believe I have missed out a few, but it can be served as a rough guide :)

The end.

My last trip to Penang was two years back ... it is time to enjoy this wonderful Island again. Thanks to the Penang Government, I have been noticing more attractions and development are happening in Penang, so, this trip is more like a discovery trip for me ......

First thing I want to know is the street art .... that why I am planting to stay at Cititel Hotel, it is just walking distance to access all these beautiful street art and heritage landmarks. For best information about the street art, the OnlyPenang is the best side whereby it had highlighted the location of various art, even it had talked about the artist who has contribute the work.

I even did a map for my photowalk in Geogetown ... look very far ( hope I can manage)

Tiong Nam Delight Encounter

Tiong Nam market is a wonderful place and is located behind Jalan Raja Laut, this place not only can get delicious breakfast but can meet some nice people.

This small market has approximately 20 over stores, everyone knows everyone, the market caters for the small Chinese community stay surrounding the areas.

Let imagine the nearby residents wake up every morning, do their usual marketing, walking around store to store for fellowship or morning gossiping .... everyone is so happy and contented with their life .... smiling faces can be seen easily ....

This is street shooters paradise, we can interact with them easily, somehow they are like friends. I love seeing you around.

I like to introduce the nasi lemak seller who has been selling there for almost 30 over years .... i found the nasi lemak is very delicious, business non-stop and customers need to queue for a while to get the food. Both husband and wife were very friendly and nice to talked with.

I enjoy their nasi lemak and their hospitality.

Yeow Chin Liang has a Polaroid camera, he took instant film photos to share with them. Friendship can be easily established, isn't it? Life can be enriched with just a simple gesture.

Like what my friend quoted "We made friend with the street people...we want more than just an image of them :) " ... well said, yeow Chin liang...

At the end of the road ... I turned around and saw a building that I worked there for seven years  ... Suddenly, an emotions just filling my body, a total of seven years I have been working there, I still can see my previous office window at the 32nd floor .... but time really fly .. almost one year had passed since I resigned from the company ..... ahhhhh!~~ ......

The end.

I am Nikon ?

It was a surprise visit to the Nikon Centre at the Time Square Shopping Mall after a Photowalk at nearby Imbi Road, we came in with a group of 17 BBG members (FB group called themselves Bang Bang Gang, film lovers). They are using vintage film camera with various model of FM3A, FE2, FM, FM2n, FE2, N90s, F55, 28Ti, 35Ti, F55 ....

Mr Alex, Nikon Centre Manager, was shocked to see so many film cameras. He cited that Nikon Film Camera Group is very much alive. With spontaneous response, Mr Alex gave everyone a Nikon T-Shirt and a Nikon wrist band. We were impressed with his kindness, the gift was small but the thought was great.

Well, some of you may think he gave T-Shirt as he wanted to take a group photo of us for publicity.... Yeah! So be it, we don't mind letting him to take a group photo for his store profile ...

hahaha ...

Some friends laughing at me as they knew I was a strong believer of Olympus Camera but they are joking I have switched camp ...

Well, for your information, I am just a simple guy who love photography .. for me, camera is just help to capture beautiful photograph, whether is Olympus, Canon, Nikon, Fijifilm etc ... it doesn't matter as long as it helps me capture beautiful shots.

There are quite a large collection of old film cameras. The cameras have arranged in a chronological order. I found the similar model of Nikon camera that my dad had passed to me. It was a FM model and born in 1977.

The photowalk was initiated by the BBG group of people, BBG stands for Bang Bang Geng, a FB group that promote the use of Film Camera. In the last TT, we were using the Olympus half frame EE camera, but this round, we were using the Nikon Film Cameras ...

Below is some photos that we have taken in the photowalk at Pudu, Imbi Road areas ...

We have found a nice abandon construction site near Imbi road. This place is full of graffiti. It has becoming famous shooting place for photo enthusiasts or even attracting wedding couple to come for their wedding shots.

Well, it was a fun day ...

Shooting Film is more challenging than to shot digital because it discourages us to shoot blindly, like what we used to do when we shoot with digital. Every shot is precious to us and we must make sure we frame correctly before we press the shutter button ...

If you have an old film camera, don't just throw it a side, get it fix and try to shoot again ...

Enjoy your Film Photography, if you own a film camera.
